STEM Programming in Research
The Research Institute has a number of programs and partnerships that are focused on developing and maintaining an up-and-coming group of scholars ready to enter STEM professions. With age-appropriate levels of engagement, students from elementary school through college can have meaningful exposures to a research environment.
Supporting Promising Academic Researchers (SPAR) fellowship
The Supporting Promising Academic Researchers (SPAR) fellowship at CHOP partners with the University of Pennsylvania's (Penn's) Provost Fellowship Program to fund Fellowship Programs at each of CHOP and Penn. The programs seek to attract promising researchers and educators whose many differences contribute significantly to the missions of these two institutions.
Bridge to Faculty Program seeks to address some of the obstacles that can limit access to tenure track faculty roles by 1) positioning program participants to be competitive for tenure track positions 2) supporting them during the application and interview process and 3) preparing them for the rigorous expectations of a tenure track faculty position driving advancement and promotion. This program is open to PhD or MD/PhD postdoctoral and early-stage scientists (i.e., Postdocs, Research Associates, Scientists, Instructors).
Gateway to Pediatric Research Program
The Gateway to Pediatric Research Program is a two-part program that introduces research at CHOP to promising senior graduate students and junior postdoctoral fellows. Individuals from different backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, life experiences, research experiences, and employment backgrounds are encouraged to register. This includes individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and women underrepresented in their scientific disciplines. For Part 1, participants from across the nation are invited to learn about the breadth of research and state-of-the-art facilities at CHOP and hear from current CHOP postdocs about life and research in Philadelphia. Part 2 participants have the opportunity to view keynote research talks from esteemed CHOP faculty, connect with CHOP faculty one-on-one, present their research to peers and faculty and receive constructive feedback.
CHOP Summer Underrepresented in Medicine Medical student Research (SUMMR) program
TheCHOP Summer Underrepresented in Medicine Medical student Research (SUMMR) program aims to increase diversity in the next generation of clinicians and scientists. Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) medical students gain early exposure to CHOP by spending eight weeks of the summer in both clinical and research environments working with international experts in pediatric care and child health research.
PennPREP and CHOP Collaborative
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) partners with the University of Pennsylvania's Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program to provide a robust post-baccalaureate experience. The program offers a one-to-two-year research experience for students who have completed their bachelor's degree, are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences and would benefit from protected time to time develop additional skills research. The program provides a full-time research experience in a biomedical science discipline at CHOP, along with preparation for applying to and succeeding in graduate school through the University of Pennsylvania.
CHOP Research Institute Summer Scholars Program (CRISSP)
CHOP Research Institute Summer Scholars Program (CRISSP) is a 10-week summer internship for undergraduates interested in research related to child health and wellness. CRISSP actively recruits students nationwide seeking applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
The Advancing Representation in Research Administration (ARRA) Program
Advancing Representation in Research Administration (ARRA) Program introduces undergraduate students and recent graduates from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences to exciting and rewarding careers in research administration. The program provides practical training within various areas of research administration at CHOP.
Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) Program
The Center for Injury Research and Prevention (CIRP) at CHOP offers a 10-week paid summer research internship opportunity for undergraduates. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) program offers students one-on-one mentorship from leading scientists, hands-on research experience, a generous stipend and contribution toward travel expenses, and free housing.
STEM Career Exposure Programs
Discovery Day, Philadelphia Youth Network BOOST, and Youth Empowerment in STEM Series (YESS) are annual day-long, science-focused workshops designed to stimulate science curiosity in high school students through exposure to research, technology, and medicine at CHOP. Exposing young talent to STEM-M careers is an essential part of CHOP's commitment to educating students at all experience levels.
Young Men and Women in Charge (YMWIC)
The mission of YMWIC is to empower and prepare economically disadvantaged and youth to excel and become leaders in STEM careers. This is accomplished through academic tutoring, mentoring and financial assistance programs. The Research Institute participates in the College/Career Expo and hosts job shadowing experiences.
CHOP Science Academy (CSA)
CHOP Science Academy provides free STEM-focused programming and interactive age-appropriate educational activities for students from 2nd-7th grade with a goal of closing the educational gaps seen in local area schools. The Academy works with students who attend the YMCA's local afterschool programs.
