Academic Departments

Seven academic departments at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia — Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Biomedical and Health Informatics, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Surgery — engage in interdisciplinary research to inform best practices that improve children’s health and well-being. Pediatrics operates as a fully integrated department of both CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania. The remaining six departments share staff and resources with their corresponding departments within the Perelman School of Medicine at Penn. Together, they create new ideas and knowledge that transform pediatric medicine.

Developing knowledge, diagnostics, and therapeutics to improve the care of children with critical illnesses, painful conditions, and those undergoing anesthesia-sedation.

The Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) explores how data, technology, and knowledge converge to improve scientific research and patient care.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' research aims to improve the immediate health and developmental trajectory of children.

Encompassing dynamic clinical, laboratory-based, and translational research programs to discern the mechanisms of pediatric diseases.

Leading pediatric research and care with innovative basic laboratory, translational, and clinical research programs spanning all pediatric divisions and subspecialties.

Using state-of-the-art technologies to conduct safe, effective diagnostic imaging for children and innovative research broadly related to pediatrics.

Investigating innovative surgical procedures unique to children, and conducting laboratory, translational, and clinical research into the basic mechanisms of diseases requiring surgery and studying a variety of treatment approaches.
