The Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care opened in 2015 on the Raymond G. Perelman Campus. Clinicians in this extraordinary building provided unsurpassed pediatric care to 88,000 families in its first year of operation.

Thanks to generous charitable donations, including the Buerger family’s landmark $50 million gift, the center contains family- and patient-friendly features such as clinical neighborhoods that group related specialties together; a design that makes wayfinding easy; spacious, light-filled waiting rooms; areas for educational play before and between appointments; and a 1,500-vehicle garage to ease arrivals and departures.

The Buerger Center is on Civic Center Boulevard just south of the main hospital. Turn left from Civic Center Boulevard into Driveway B, and follow signs to Garage B.

Victoria A. Miller, PhD

Dr. Miller conducts developmentally informed behavioral research to examine the impact of parent-youth communication and decision making on health-related behaviors and outcomes. She aims to conduct research that facilitates youth involvement and empowerment in health-related decision making and enhances parent-youth-provider relationships.

Adda Grimberg, MD

Dr. Grimberg investigates the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I axis and clinical issues related to child growth. Her recent research is focused on disparities in, and the decision-making related to, the medical management of children with short stature. She is fascinated by how differential societal pressures for tallness and the advent of an expensive therapeutic have transformed a fundamental aspect of pediatric healthcare.

Bauer Laboratory for Thyroid Cancer Research

The Bauer Lab focuses on improving our understanding of the molecular landscape of pediatric thyroid cancer in an effort to optimize the diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration, identify markers that predict invasive behavior and prognosis, and identify targets for improved treatment options.

Andrew J. Bauer, MD

Dr. Bauer's academic and clinical career are focused on improving the care of children and adolescents with thyroid disease. He has extensive experience and knowledge of thyroid pathophysiology and tumorigenesis, and has been critical to the clinical success of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Thyroid Center.

Evan S. Fieldston, MD, MBA, MSHP

Dr. Fieldston focuses on evidence-based management aimed at delivering high-value care and the impact of operational issues on patient outcomes. His academic work included investigating associations between patient flow, care models, workload and occupancy levels, and resource utilization on the quality of healthcare delivered to children, particularly those in the hospital, as well as healthcare value and value education.

Warren D. Frankenberger, PhD, RN

Dr. Frankenberger's research focuses on emergency nursing, with an emphasis on nursing workforce, triage practices, and patient outcomes.

Elizabeth B. Froh, PhD

As a nurse-scientist, Dr. Froh works to translate her research from human milk science into cutting-edge clinical practice. To this end she collaborates with others across the Department of Nursing in both research and evidence-based practice.

Louis M. Bell, MD

Dr. Bell, chief of the Division of General Pediatrics, has research expertise in areas including computerized clinical decision support to improve the quality of care; epidemiology, management and treatment of common pediatric infectious diseases; the use of primary care practice-based research networks for clinical research; and quality improvement through the use of clinical pathways.

Steven M. Willi, MD

Dr. Willi's research focuses on therapeutics for type 1 and type 2 diabetes and he has performed a number of physiologic studies in the etiology and characterization of diabetes in children. His current studies include trials on the delay of progression of type 1 diabetes and a multicenter trial to examine the optimal therapeutics for type 2 diabetes in children.
