The Pediatric KIDney Stone Care Improvement Network, also known as PKIDS, is an integrated and collaborative community of patients, caregivers, and clinicians. The mission of PKIDS is to improve outcomes for children with kidney stone disease through collaborative patient-centered research. PKIDS accomplishes this mission by establishing an interactive environment, across more than 25 pediatric healthcare systems in North America, to generate and apply knowledge that improves outcomes that are most important to patients.

This video will provide a brief introduction to the PKIDS network.

Transcript

I want to introduce you to PKIDS—the Pediatric Kidney Stone Care Improvement Network. I am Gregory Tasian, the Director of the PKIDS Network.

PKIDS Mission slide

Founded in January 2020, PKIDS is a community of patients, caregivers and clinicians with a mission to improve the lives of children and young adults with kidney stone disease through collaboration, partnership, and patient-centered research.

Embracing Partnership slide

PKIDS works to improve clinical outcomes through the formation of a unique research network, which includes patients and their caregivers, not just as participants in the research, but as partners and experts within a unique group called the Patient and Family Partners. PKIDS also partners with clinicians, industry, and health system leaders, both locally and nationally. These partners provide their expertise across a continuum of activities within the PKIDS Network, from study planning to conducting the research, and finally, most importantly disseminating and applying the results to improve lives.

PKIDS SITES slide

The 26 active sites which comprise the PKIDS Network, ensure a diverse patient population and bring their unique practice environment and experiences to the collaboration. We create an infrastructure and regulatory environment for collecting and sharing data, and facilitating communications across these sites.

Organizational Structure slide

The strength of the PKIDS community stems from our partnerships and diversity. This diversity means that all generated results reflect how care is actually delivered in North America. The infrastructure and relationships within the community enable generated knowledge to be applied across the Network back into clinical care at these sites, thereby directly improving outcomes.

Study Design slide

The PKIDS Network is currently enrolling participants for a comparative effectiveness study of the three most common surgical treatments for children and adults with kidney stones, which include URS, SWL and PCNL. This study is embedded within the routine clinical care of children and young adults with kidney stones between the ages of 8 and 21, who are treated by the more than 100 surgeons within the PKIDS Network. The outcomes of this study include stone clearance, which is measured by a clinical ultrasound four to eight weeks after surgery, and participant-prioritized experiences after surgery. Patient-centered outcomes were selected by our Patient and Family Partners, and include pain intensity, pain interference, anxiety, sleep disturbance, psychological stress, impact on peer relationships, and urinary symptoms.

Evidence Application slide

Because PKIDS generates evidence directly from patient care, the results that are shown to improve outcomes are therefore more readily applied back into care. In PKIDS we apply this evidence using a rigorous approach that includes principles of implementation science, including transparency, dissemination, and continuous assessment. Through this approach, we will continually refine processes and techniques to improve outcomes that matter the most to patients.
