The Office of Research Safety offers the following specialized safety training programs:

CHOP Research Institute Safety Training for Environmental Services

Environmental Services staff who provide service to the Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building will learn how to recognize hazard warning signs, protect yourself against recognized hazards in the facilities, and assist in emergency response procedures.


Target Audience: Environmental Services staff
Required Frequency/Format: Annual, In-person training
Approximate Training Time: 1 hour
Training Offered: Scheduled on as-needed basis

If you provide service to the Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building you should know how to recognize hazard warning signs, protect yourself against recognized hazards in the facilities, and assist in emergency response procedures. Topics such as vital building information, hazard communication, emergency response, and facilities safety training are covered in this training.

This is scheduled on an annual basis by contacting the Office of Research Safety Training Coordinator at researchsafety@chop.edu or 267-426-2272.

If you provide service to the Research Institute animal facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building, you should know how to recognize hazard warning signs, protect yourself against recognized hazards in the facilities, and implement emergency response procedures. Topics such as vital building information, hazard communication, emergency response, and facilities safety training are covered in this training.

Colket Translational Research Building Vendor and Visitor Training

Vendors providing service to some Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building and visitors entering some of the Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building are required to attend Vendor/Visitor training

Target Audience:Vendors/visitors requiring access to some areas of Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building
Required Frequency/Format:Once, In-person Training
Approximate Training Time: 1 hour
Training Offered:Scheduled on as-needed basis

Vendors providing service to the Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building and visitors entering the Research Institute facilities in Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building are required to attend Vendor training. Training MUST be completed prior to entering the Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building facilities that require the training.

If you have a vendor or visitor coming on-site who will need to enter the Abramson Research Center and/or Colket Translational Research Building facilities, please contact the Office of Research Safety Training Coordinator at researchsafety@chop.edu or 267-426-2272 to find out if this training is needed and to schedule a training time.

Irradiator User Training
Researchers requiring use of the Abramson Research Center irradiator must complete an application and receive approval from Environmental Health and Radiation Safety prior to use.

Target Audience: Researchers requiring access to the Abramson Research Center Irradiator
Required Frequency/Format: Once, In-person training
Approximate Training Time: 20 minutes
Training Offered: Scheduled on as-needed basis

Researchers requiring use of the ARC irradiator must complete an application and receive approval from Environmental Health and Radiation Safety prior to use.

Irradiator User Requirements

  • Submit the appropriate application for access
  • Submit to finger printing
  • Agree to an FBI criminal background check
  • Complete the training program through the University of Pennsylvania Environmental Health and Radiation Safety Office (EHRS)
  • Complete the Irradiator User Training through the CHOP Office of Research Safety

Training is a two part process. A new user of the ARC Irradiator must first complete online training through the Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety (EHRS) at the University of Pennsylvania. Once training and clearance through EHRS is completed, Irradiator User Training can be scheduled by contacting the Office of Research Safety Training Coordinator at researchsafety@chop.edu or 267-426-2272.
