The Research Workforce Advancement and Specialized Programs tier serves a critical role in building a community of highly specialized and exceptionally trained early-stage scientists from a variety of diverse backgrounds, positioning Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as the preeminent place to perform advanced pediatric research. We focus on two primary facets to accomplish these overarching goals: 1) specialty programs and 2) diversity and inclusion initiatives.
In partnership with CHOP Research Institute Leadership, we lead the development, implementation, and management of formal, discipline-specific research programs that align with scientific areas outlined in the CHOP Research Institute Strategic Plan. The Research Workforce Advancement and Specialized Programs tier focuses on providing exceptional, highly focused training opportunities and experiences for trainees at the Research Institute. These programs leverage areas of expertise found at CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania to address training and knowledge gaps, providing our trainees with competitive skills for success.
Each person at CHOP brings a unique perspective, and these diverse worldviews and backgrounds drive our passion for scientific advancement and discovery. In a workforce that is representative of so many backgrounds, it is important to create an inclusive environment in which every employee feels valued and welcomed. The Research Workforce Advancement and Specialized Programs tier actively works to support our growing population of diverse scientists by developing relevant programming and creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for researchers from all backgrounds. This work starts with outreach across all stages of the educational spectrum to cultivate interest in STEM and continues with efforts to increase broad representation at the Research Institute while developing mechanisms to cultivate an inclusive culture.
