Brian R. White, MD, PhD
Brian R. White

Dr. White develops novel optical functional neuroimaging systems and algorithms to better understand pediatric neuronal injury. His research includes optical intrinsic signal imaging, diffuse optical tomography, and resting-state functional connectivity.

C. Dean Kurth, MD
C. Dean Kurth

Dr. Kurth is a physician-scientist-leader in pediatric anesthesiology, quality and safety, and pediatric healthcare. He has experience conducting basic, clinical, and translational research studies as well as quality improvement projects to investigate clinical problems and develop technologies to understand the problem and devise therapies to prevent or treat it.

E-mail:
kurthcd [at] chop.edu
Rebecca C. Ahrens-Nicklas, MD, PhD
Rebecca C. Ahrens-Nicklas, MD, PhD

Dr. Ahrens-Nicklas works to understand why patients with inherited biochemical disorders often suffer severe, untreatable neurologic and cardiac symptoms. She strives to elucidate the link between biochemistry and network excitability, in order to drive new approaches to therapy.

E-mail:
ahrensnicklasr [at] chop.edu
Naiara Akizu, PhD
Photo of Naiara Akizu

Dr. Akizu's research focuses on cerebellar ataxias and motoneuron disorders, with the specific goals of uncovering the particularities of these neuronal types, understanding disease mechanisms, and exploring treatment options.

E-mail:
aquizun [at] chop.edu
Hajime Takano, PhD
Hajime Takano

Dr. Takano's research focuses on basic epilepsy and related neuroscience research centered on advanced optical imaging techniques such as fluorescence lifetime imaging and two-photon microscopy; and application of micro- and nanotechnology like graphene transparent electrode to functional cellular imaging.

Xilma R. Ortiz-Gonzalez, MD, PhD
Xilma R. Ortiz-Gonzalez

Dr. Ortiz-Gonzalez is a physician-scientist specializing in pediatric neurogenetics. Her clinical work focuses on finding a unifying genetic diagnosis for children with rare neurodevelopmental disorders. Her research is informed by her patients and focuses on understanding how genetic changes, in particular those affecting mitochondrial function, cause disease so we can develop better treatments for these children in the future.

Christina L. Master, MD, FAAP, CAQSM, FACSM
Christina L. Master

Dr. Master studies pediatric and adolescent concussions and identifies interventions that improve time to recovery and clinical outcomes. In particular, she is interested in visual and vestibular problems that occur after concussion that may contribute to persisting prolonged symptomatology and impaired function and the role they play as targets for active intervention.

E-mail:
masterc [at] chop.edu
Rebecca N. Ichord, MD
Rebecca N. Ichord

Dr. Ichord participates in multiple research projects within Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and in collaboration with other stroke investigators. Dr. Ichord is especially interested in better understanding the effect of stroke on complex brain function, such as thinking and learning, and developing new strategies to promote recovery and rehabilitation.

E-mail:
ichord [at] chop.edu
Qin Wang, PhD
Qin Wang

Dr. Wang is involved in several projects that aim to investigate the pathological function of the novel protein variants identified from neurodevelopmental patients and to explore how to promote functional axon regeneration after traumatic brain injury or neurodegeneration.

E-mail:
wangq3 [at] chop.edu
Katherine L. Helbig, MS, LCGC
Katherine L. Helbig

Katherine Helbig’s research focuses on identifying new genetic causes of epilepsy and understanding how genetic variation leads to seizures. An additional research focus is improving access to genetic services for people with epilepsy and investigating the impact of genetics on health outcomes.
