The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) component of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia's Department of Pharmacy Services complements the institution's clinical research mission in advancing new therapeutic modalities. The IDS can assist the clinical investigator with a broad range of study related functions on a fee for service basis. Services include initiation of investigational protocols, medication storage/ preparation/ dispensing, literature reviews, pharmacokinetics evaluations or other services that may be required as part of the study. Clinical investigators should contact the IDS prior to grant and/or IRB submission to coordinate Pharmacy IDS services.

The IDS manages approximately 300 studies involving investigational products, including FDA-approved medications; products being studied under an Investigational New Drug (IND) application; and over-the-counter medications, including supplements and vitamins.

All investigational products are handled by CHOP’s IDS, unless the IDS determines otherwise. Additionally, all hazardous and controlled substances, as well as products that require sterile product preparation or minor compounding, will be stored and dispensed by the IDS. Products are handled, dispensed, and stored in accordance with study protocol and sponsor requirements, Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, and all applicable institutional, state, and federal rules and regulations.
