The Offices of Immigration & Visa Services, Academic Training and Outreach Programs (ATOP) and Employee Resource Group iSTEM are pleased to announce the "My Story" speaker series, with Hakon Hakonarson, MD, PhD. Mark your calendars and be sure to register. Lunch will be provided. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Dr. Hakonarson is director of the Center for Applied Genomics and professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He leads a $40 million commitment from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to genomically characterize approximately 100,000 children, an initiative that has gained nationwide attention in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Time Magazine, Nature, and Science.

Dr. Hakonarson has a passion for horses, particularly the unique gaited breed of Icelandic horses. He rode horses competitively in Iceland and today, he and his family have two Icelandic horses at their home in Valley Forge which they enjoy riding on weekends. Dr. Hakonarson’s love of horses stems from childhood and he had intended to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

He is also an avid runner and bicyclist. He usually arrives at CHOP by 5:30 am and starts the day with a 35-minute run to the Art Museum area. On weekends, he typically bikes between 30 and 60 miles in and around Valley Forge National Park, or down into Philadelphia.
