Data Management and Biostatistics Research Overview

The BDMC staff provides biostatistical and data management expertise and support to investigators for studies ranging from small, basic science projects to large, multisite clinical trials. They include doctoral and master’s level statisticians and statistical programmers who have experience working on these types of studies from the design phase through the completion of manuscripts and/or submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Westat, a large health research organization with extensive biostatistics, data management, and information technology capabilities operates and supports the BMDC. Within the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics, the DSBU works with researchers to define research questions, select appropriate data, and utilize appropriate methodologies for data analyses. The DSBU team has significant expertise in managing and using various data sources, ranging from electronic health records, clinical trial, or registry data, to administrative, claims, or survey data. They work with researchers to prepare data visually in graphical and tabular forms for use in publications, such as academic journals, research reports, and other formats. Members of this group have faculty appointments in both the Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at The University of Pennsylvania and the Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). As faculty members, they develop and evaluate improved statistical approaches and train the next generation of biostatisticians and medical researchers, ranging from students, postdoctoral researchers to faculty members. They have a strong passion for and a firm commitment to collaborations with investigators in Pediatrics at CHOP. Faculty biostatisticians typically serve as principal investigators in their methods grants and co-investigators in other grants as the lead statisticians who join projects early in planning phases. They participate in developing the proposal, with a focus on the statistical analysis plan. They also provide input on appropriate staff support for analysis and data management, and for the need for additional investigators with complementary expertise (e.g., epidemiology or informatics). Once the study is underway, faculty biostatisticians will typically guide the analyses and serve as the lead statisticians and co-authors on manuscripts.
