CAR Student Alumni Stories: Mary Zhuo Ke, BSE
Mary Zhuo Ke, BSE joined the Motor and Language Lab team at CAR in 2017. During her two years at CAR, she supported scientists including Casey Zampella, PhD and Keith Bartley, MS, working with gross motor data using motion-detection software to study differences between typically developing children and children with autism spectrum disorder in the process of learning new tasks.
"I used Python to process movement data generated from these technologies and looked at classifying features from facial expression and motor data," Zhuo Ke said.
Zhuo Ke also worked with Leila Bateman, manager of clinical data management, and the CAR Data and Statistical Core.
"I was particularly interested in automating processes in the lab to save time and improve consistency of coding and quality checking of high volumes of data, such as transcribed audio and language data. This automation process demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary work where engineering is bridged with psychology and neuroscience to maximize the potential from clinical research projects at CAR,"Zhuo Ke said. "This experience contributed to my future pursuits, where I hope to expand my skill sets to find additional ways to efficiently extract meaningful insights from data."
Zhuo Ke graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Bioengineering in 2019. She subsequently became a technical solutions engineer at Epic for advancing electronic health record software deployment at hospitals and healthcare institutions across the United States. Zhou Ke then pursued a research fellowship at the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, where she conducted independent research and worked with Principal Investigators at Pennsylvania State University, University of Delaware, Northwestern, and Columbia on U.S. Army research initiatives.
Zhuo Ke is currently a research data manager at Boston Children's Hospital, where she manages the design and implementation of data science toolkits and clinical database development across multiple institutions in Boston, Singapore, Bangladesh. and New Zealand. She is pursuing a Masters of Liberal Arts degree in Data Science at Harvard University's Extension School, as she hopes to bridge state-of-the-art, data-driven technologies with clinical research.
